Learn to Expect the Unexpected!!!!

Such is the case for all homeowners, renters & automobile owners in the "real world."  Take these examples of the unexpected:

  • A driver hit a bicyclist in Florida riding near the shoulder of the road resulting in a loss of $651,605.
  • In Florida, an insured's dog bit a painter while he was working in the insure'd home creating a $312,847 liability claim.
  • In Pennsylvania, 11 people were on the insured's deck when it collapsed, creating a $1,181,486 liability impact.
  • In New York, a loss of consciousness caused a driver to have a head on collision resulting in a $1,250,000 liability loss.

In each of these cases of the unexpected, the insured had a personal umbrella to cover the loss.  Without it, they could have been on the hook for the loss amount.  In our increasingly litigious society, no one is safe from the threat of being sued.  Please be sure to ask about a personal or commercial umbrella.

Portable GPS Systems!!!!

If you are one of the millions of new owners of a portable GPS navigation system please take care of your new toy. They are a VERY high target for theft and generally not covered under most standar auto policies. You can purchase special electronic equipment coverage on your auto policy or it may be covered as contents off your home or renters policy. Most of these units have come down so far in price that they usually fall below your homeowners deductible.

The damage to the car would be covered by your auto policy if you purchase "other than collision" coverage but the damaged caused may be less than your auto deductible. Don't leave these devices in plain site and take care to wipe off the ring left behind on windshield mounted devices as theives have learn that the GPS unit is usually under a seat or in the glove box.

WHAT IS AN INSURANCE SCORE?

WHERE DOES MY SCORE COME FROM?

WHY DO INSURERS USE SCORES?

HOW DO YOU KNOW IT WORKS?

What should I do when renting a car?

We often get asked "do I need to purchase the rental car companies insurance?"

Our answer is YES. Rental car contracts vary widely between companies and have changed dramatically over the past few years. A standard personal auto policy may not cover all the rental car companies expenses in the event you are in an accident in one of their cars.

Three unforeseen expenses that are not covered by a standard auto policy are:

  • Loss of Use: The rental car company tries to bill you for the number of days their car is unavailable for rental while being repaired after an accident.
  • Diminution in value: The reduction in a vehicle's market value due to its having been in an accident. When the repaired car is eventually sold, it brings a lower price.
  • Before & After: Diminution in value is a concern when the rental company repairs a damaged vehicle—but today many cars are never repaired. With some types of damage, liability concerns make rental companies reluctant to return a repaired car to the fleet. Instead, they simply sell the damaged car for salvage. They then charge the renter the difference between the market value on the day of rental ("before") and the amount the car brought at the salvage auction ("after")
